Ochlockonee River Soil and Water Conservation District Appoints Thure Caire

Youngest Person in an Elected Position in Leon County

TALLAHASSEE, FL (Feb. 16, 2006) Michael Thure Caire was appointed to the Ochlockonee River Soil and Water Conservation District Monday, making him the youngest person in an elected position in Leon County at 24-years-old. The appointment was made by a majority vote of the members of the Ochlockonee River Soil and Water Conservation Commission. This appointment fills the position vacated by the resignation of Kim O Connor.

Ever since the age of 19 Caire has been active in issues relating to water quality and ecology. In 2001, on summer break from college, he began working as an environmental quality technician at a local water quality lab, where he continued working each summer until his college graduation in May 2004.

While at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, he was awarded a competitive one-year internship with the United States Geological Survey, and served as an Honors Mentor, a role typically reserved for graduate or doctorate students. His college Thesis covered the effects of urbanization on stream communities, and results from his two-year research were published in North American Bethological Society Bulletin (2003, 2004).

Back in Tallahassee, Caire served as the TAPP (Think About Personal Pollution) Outreach Coordinator from 2004 to 2005. Since 2004, he has been working full-time for the City of Tallahassee Stormwater Management Division as an Engineering Technician.

Caire spends many evenings volunteering at Lincoln Neighborhood Health Services and serves as Vice-President of the Leon County Young Democrats.
