ORSWCD MISSION

The mission of the Ochlockonee River Soil and Water Conservation District Board is to annually assess the condition of the soils and waters, both above and below ground, in Leon County; to educate the public about the state of the soils and waters; to educate the public about conservation practices which will enhance the conditions of the soils and waters; and to promote and advocate conservation practices and policies which will benefit the soils and waters of the County.

1. Why should I care about the ORSWCD?
The SWCD has special oversight powers regarding the protection of our natural resources in Leon County. The SWCD has been a prominent environmental education advocate, administering more educational funds than any other local branch of government. Your attention ensures that the SWCD will be made of the most qualified and capable people.

2. What is the ORSWCD?
The SWCD is a board, composed of five supervisors, each elected county-wide. This board has special oversight powers to protect our natural resources in Leon County, and to promote the use of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) in our area. Our board administers state and federal grants to promote conservation, BMP’s and environmental education in our community.

3. How does this affect me?
The SWCD promotes environmental education for elementary children, including safety education about lightning, fires, hurricanes and other natural phenomenon. The SWCD also administers grants that bring in money from outside of our community to help conserve our resources, and the SWCD can advise on environmental policy and regulation to prompt the efficient spending, or saving, of public funds.
